چکیده

This article is one of ten reviews selected from the Annual Update in Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine 2017. Other selected articles can be found online at http://ccforum.com/series/annualupdate2017 . Further information about the Annual Update in Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine is available from http://www.springer.com/series/8901 .Originally published in the Annual Update in Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine 2017. The number of authors differs in the two versions due to constraints regarding the number of authors in the Annual Update in Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine. In the Annual Update version of the review, the three senior authors appear in the acknowledgement section. In the Critical Care version, these three senior authors appear as full authors of the manuscript. All authors helped draft and revise the manuscript for critical intellectual content.

Sepsis associated encephalopathy (SAE): a review.

Sepsis associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a poorly understood condition that is associated with severe sepsis and appears to have a negative influence on survival. The incidence of encephalopathy secondary to sepsis is unknown. Amino acid derangements, blood-brain barrier disruption, abnormal neurotransmitters, and direct CNS effect are possible causes of septic encephalopathy. Research has not...

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy as a differential diagnosis with motor deficit plus altered mental status.

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a poorly understood and underdiagnosed neurological complication of sepsis. Several conditions commonly associated with sepsis (hepatic or renal dysfunction, electrolyte abnormalities, acid-base disturbances, glycemia disturbances, hypotension, hypoxemia, sedation, body temperature disturbances, and neuroendocrine dysfunction) make SAE evaluation diffic...

Clinical neurophysiological assessment of sepsis-associated brain dysfunction: a systematic review

INTRODUCTION Several studies have reported the presence of electroencephalography (EEG) abnormalities or altered evoked potentials (EPs) during sepsis. However, the role of these tests in the diagnosis and prognostic assessment of sepsis-associated encephalopathy remains unclear. METHODS We performed a systematic search for studies evaluating EEG and/or EPs in adult (≥ 18 years) patients with...

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy: not just delirium

Sepsis is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in intensive care units. Organ dysfunction is triggered by inflammatory insults and tissue hypoperfusion. The brain plays a pivotal role in sepsis, acting as both a mediator of the immune response and a target for the pathologic process. The measurement of brain dysfunction is difficult because there are no specific biomarkers of neuronal injur...

CRITICAL CARE Elevated S100B levels do not correlate with the severity of encephalopathy during sepsis

Background. Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is defined as a diffuse cerebral dysfunction induced by the systemic response to infection without any clinical or laboratory evidence of direct infectious involvement of the central nervous system. The astroglial protein S100B has been used as a marker of severity of brain injury and as a prognostic index in trauma patients and cardiac arrest ...
